La Roca Skateboard Park welcomed the kids from 2nd Chances, and they arrived eager to skate. Getting them off their boards and seated for the briefing was hilarious. However, once seated and given direction, the session began with demonstrations and tricks. The kids then received skate lessons, and I was amazed at how quickly they learned and how fearless they became as time progressed.
They shared the boards nicely and helped each other overcome their fears. As a former skateboarder, I even joined in with some basic moves, fully aware of my age and the potential risk of injury. It's funny how, as adults, fearlessness is tempered with wisdom and reality.
What stood out to me was the hearts of the La Roca team, David and Walter. David's gentle and patient demeanor was evident as he worked graciously with the kids, while Walter's light-filled and joyful spirit shone through as he smiled all day long. The love of God was seen and felt through their actions.
The ladies leading the 2nd Chance group were so loving to the kids, and it was obvious the kids knew they were loved because they reciprocated that love to all of us.
I realized that language doesn't have to be a barrier; the kids were patient with our Spanglish, and it showed that as long as you try, you can communicate. Smiles, hugs, and demonstrations transcend language barriers.
When it was time for the kids to paint their skateboards, they enthusiastically embraced the activity. Watching their creativity come alive reminded me of how we should embrace God's creativity in our lives. When we let God take the paintbrush, our lives become magnificent and brilliant.
La Roca is a place that can open doors for these kids, keeping them engaged in positive activities and out of trouble. Pray for La Roca to continue putting God first, to have community support and impact, and to receive the necessary funding to keep their doors open. Pray for the leaders at La Roca to remain united, loving towards one another, all while building each other up in the faith.
Pray for the children at 2nd Chances to stay Christ-centered and grow deeper in the ways of Jesus. Pray for their safety and that they pursue activities that edify themselves and each other. Pray for the leaders at 2nd Chances to continue loving the kids as Jesus would and to have the resources to keep their program running and growing to impact more kids.
Finally, pray for Freedom and Nancy to continue laying the necessary foundation for this partnership and for spiritual insight to know what to do and when to do it.
